Atlas Copco Robbins 91RHC Raiseborer

Raisebore Australia have been contracted to provide major Raiseboring Services to Aeris Resources – Tritton Operations located near Nyngan in New South Wales.

The project is to complete a variety of raiseboring works and includes an 865 metre deep by 5.0 metre diameter Return Air Raise (RAR) from surface to 4385 level. RBA is using an Atlas Copco Robbins 91RH C raisebore machine to complete the project.

The construction of the shaft includes the drilling of a 15″ pilot hole utilising the Micon Rotary Vertical Drilling System (RVDS) followed by back reaming of the 15″ pilot hole with a 5.0 metre diameter reamer.

The Pilot hole was completed in October 2016, drill depth was 865 metres with 0.08% drilling accuracy – this equates to 700 mm deviation from the design centre-line of the hole…this is precision drilling.  An excellent result!

Raisebore Australia cements itself as a significant player on the global raiseboring market with a new drill that provides improved safe-work practices and operational efficiencies to the mining and construction industries.

Leading privately owned South Australia-based raiseboring specialist Raisebore Australia (RBA) has further invested significant capital in world-leading technology that will not only provide major safety advancements to the mining industry, but also offer operational efficiencies.

For RBA, the acquisition of its second Atlas Copco 91RH raiseborer further opens mining opportunities in Australia and cements the company as a strong competitor in the global marketplace.

The company has already operated across seven countries and was recently awarded a two-year contract in India. This increase in the RBA fleet will allow further diversification in the international raiseboring field.

“Our latest investment reflects our confidence in the Australian mining industry and highlights our view that raiseboring is now an international marketplace. The acquisition expands our fleet to four machines of nominal 5.0m capacity diameter, three machines of 3.5m diameter capacity and six slot machines,” says Rod Bertram, RBA Managing Director.

The Atlas Copco 1000 volt 91RH follows the January 2010 purchase of the Atlas Copco 415 volt 91RH to offer various voltage alternatives to our clients.

“We found the 415 volt 91RH to be an outstanding performer, so pursued the 1000 volt 91RH. Both raiseborers offer the latest computerised technology with data-logging capacity, while its operating system is what we consider the most advanced in the world today. Due to its efficiency, it will reduce the cost per metre of raiseboring,” says Bertram.

The Swedish design is semi-automatic, which eliminates the manual handling of the 127/8” (327mm) diameter drill rods, which are a requirement to comply with OEM specifications to ream shafts of 4.0 metre and greater diameter.

“RBA considers safety improvement as the most important factor in all our acquisitions, so we see the machine’s automation feature a major safety factor for companies when using large-diameter raiseborers,” says Bertram.

The machine is currently undergoing commissioning in Kalgoorlie and will be available to the Australian and international markets from early-February 2014.

RBA is the only company to own these Atlas Copco raiseborers in Australia and has received onsite training from Atlas Copco representatives from both Sweden and the United States. RBA has appointed a Compliance Superintendent to manage the introduction of the new machine, while continuing training for other machines within its fleet to complement the market-leading support from Atlas Copco.

Premier Brumby said that, “The Bogong Hydro Power Station is a great example of how climate change can provide a climate of opportunity – with new investment, more jobs and a cleaner environment.”

The Bogong Power Development Project, awarded to McConnell Dowell Constructors (Aust) Pty Ltd by AGL Southern Hydro in September 2006, subcontracted by Raisebore Australia and commissioned in October 2009, forms the largest hydro power project constructed in mainland Australia for 25 years.

The complete design and construction scope of the ‘Zero Emission’ hydro plant consisted of:

• 6.5km of 5m diameter hardrock tunnel constructed using a 5m diameter tunnel boring machine, operated by McConnell Dowell;
• 1.3km of drill and blast tunnels;
• 250m of 5m diameter shafts drilled by Raisebore Australia’s 97RL raiseboring machine;
• 5,000 t penstock liners; power station construction and installation of two 70 MW turbines.

Mr Brumby explained that “the 7km water tunnel between McKay Creek Hydro Power Station and the Bogong Hydro Power Station is one of the largest hard-rock tunnels constructed in the Southern Hemisphere in the last 40 years using tunnel boring equipment.”

“This new hydro power facility forms part of AGL Southern Hydro’s strategic energy framework for the supply of green peak demand power. It harnesses the Rocky Valley and Pretty Valley branches of the East Kiewa River and existing water resources released from the Mackay Creek Power Station to generate 140MW of renewable power.”

“The design has ensured that this project has been great for the economy and great for the environment, producing zero emission energy while conserving our valuable water resources.”

“The key to meeting Victoria’s future energy needs is to deliver new clean energy such as the Bogong Hydro Power Station. It forms part of a grid of cleaner energy including solar, gas-fired and wind power which are all driving up jobs and investment, particularly in regional Victoria.”

“This project is unique because it delivers clean energy without the need for new dams or new water by reusing water already used by the McKay Creek Power Station,” said the Premier.
